Smart locks are still trying to become mainstream accessories for home-owners and although some might still be sceptical about automatic door-locking and door-opening, smart door locks could well be the future of household functioning. The cutely named Teodoor is one step further towards that future with its brand-new smart lock.
First announced in April, the smart lock was shown off for its looks and its aesthetics. The lock is now officially available for pre-order and will be available for the price of $99 and extra $50 for a Wi-Fi enabled one. Essentially, using a proprietary app, the lock will enable hands-free access through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 that can recognize the user’s device. If the user moves as close as five to 10 feet within the proximity of the door, it unlocks by itself.
Of course, if the user’s phone is lost, the smart lock can account for that as well, allowing for users to log in through the company’s web app and disable the smartphone’s access. Users will also be able to do this through another smartphone with the app or even reset the device manually. Teodoor will use high-level encryptions and algorithms that will ensure optimum safety for users’ details and private information. The lock can be made to open and close on a schedule basis and right now, serves more of the purpose that Office-goers might need – much like a fingerprint sensor for accessing the door. The smart lock can also sense when there is some force being used to pry open the door and alert the users.
The company claims that Teodoor can be used without the app needing to be opened on the smartphone, so users will not have to do any work in order to use the functions of the app. Other details surrounding the technology right now have not been divulged just yet, but the developers are looking to get some funding on Kickstarter very soon. The smart lock industry is expected to be worth $24 billion by the year 2024, so there is scope for a booming business to thrive on in the near future. Teodoor will be making its presence felt among its competition, which right now consists of almost all the exact same functionalities. But Teodoor could differentiate itself by way of it’s a application and features. One of its biggest USPs is, that it is the smallest smart lock out there right now
For those interested in the product and want to pre-order, the product will be shipped by the end of the year and they will also be rewarded with a Ring Video Doorbell or a Chipolo Plus Tracker. The only question that seems to be lingering on our minds is, what if the smartphone’s battery runs out before the user can reach home. Will the smart lock automatically sense the phone and unlock it? Now that’s a $24 billion question.
