Xiaomi have announced a new range of Redmi phones – the Redmi 4, 4A and 4 Prime. They’ve introduced quite a bit of new features to boot, so here’s the wrap up on how the best of this generation – the 4 Prime, compares to the best of the last generation – the 3S Prime.
Processor
This time around, Xiaomi has added a powerful Snapdragon 625 processor – an Octa-core chip clocked at 2 GHz and Adreno 506 GPU. It’ll be a treat for those processor intensive apps and games.
The Redmi 3S Prime featured the Snapdragon 430 chip – still an Octa-core, but a little less powerful at 1.4 GHz with an Adreno 505 GPU. It’s a significant upgrade, alright and a lot more efficient, especially since the newer model will be pushing a lot more pixels this time around.
Display
The 3S Prime came with a 720p screen at 5-inches. For a phone released in August of 2016, that’s a pretty disappointing spec for a display. Fortunately, this time around, the 4 Prime has a 1080p screen at the same height, so we get richer image quality.
Camera
Perhaps the only difference in this department is that the Redmi 4 Prime will come with dual LED flash, which, in the case of the Redmi 3S Prime, has only a single LED flash. Apart from that, both have the same 13MP camera on the back and a 5MP camera on the front.
Both phones will also have the same battery at 4,100mAh and the same fingerprint sensor. Storage options will also be the same, with the 32GB being in-built and expandable storage also available. Both phones will also come with MIUI on top of Marshmallow!
As far as upgrades go, this is pretty minor for Xiaomi. And while some users would have only by now, just gotten used to their Redmi 3S Primes which they would have purchased three months ago fresh, they’ll probably be a bit disappointed that in the three months since its launch, there’s already a more capable variant in town.
But it should be expected, since Xiaomi are making a lot of smartphones in the market and have taken over a large share of the pie-chart in terms of smartphone sales. So continuous updates to existing best-selling line-ups is expected. The upgrades might not make much of a difference for those to reconsider their buying decision, but for those who want a budget device in the entry-level segment with amazing internal specs, the Redmi 4 Prime is the phone to beat.
