Android co-founder’s Essential phone specs revealed

It was less than a month ago that Andy Rubin gave the world a peek at his company’s newest handset – the Essential phone that we could only catch a glimpse of, showing the near-bezelless screen. Now, we have a lot more information about the new phone, thanks to a GFXBench score, and it will not disappoint.

Andy Rubin had earlier teased the phone in a Twitter post

The recorded name of the phone was found to be the Essential FIH-PM1. The GFXBench was really put through its bases since the device was shown to have some remarkable specs, namely, the existence of a Snapdragon 835 chipset that is clocked at 2.2GHz, 4GB of RAM, a 12MP rear camera as well as a front-facing 8MP selfie-snapper. It seems that both sensors will be able to record 4K videos, which can be enjoyed on that beautifully bezel less 5.5-inch screen with a resolution of 2,560×1,312 pixels. Quite strangely though, the company has only fitted 16GB of in-built storage on the phone. Perhaps the test device that was being used to benchmark itself had only 16GB of ROM and the company probably will have different variants to match different price brackets (we hope).

It was pointed out by Neowin that some of the information that was leaked may be inaccurate since a snapshot of the benchmarked device shows an 18-inch screen, so, whether Essential just configured its screen to seem that way to GFXBench just to throw us all off, it was a pretty good move. If not, then we have a pretty interesting phone to look forward to. An 18-inch screen that can fit in a pocket? Yes, please! It can also be found in the snapshot that camera functions such as autofocus, face detection, HDR and even touch focus were shown to not be present. This could probably because of the early software development stages that the phone is probably in.

The phone also might come with the latest Android OS, since Android 7.0 was shown in the info screenshots. The new Essential phone is set to feature some proprietary magnetic connectors, perhaps for attaching hardware accessories. It is also speculated that the phone could come with a ceramic back panel. People have also given a shot at estimating the price of the phone for whenever it launches, and the majority claim that it will be around $650.

The screenshot of the information leaked was taken back in December, so it can be safe to say that Essential has grown its flagship handset since then by a fair margin.
