ZTE Nubia Z17 mini official: Dual cameras, two variants and Ronaldo’s approval

There has been a long campaign surrounding ZTE’s new Nubia Z17 mini smartphone in terms of speculations regarding what the phone’s specs will consist of and now we have official confirmation.

The device has finally been launched and all the speculations were spot on. That not only means that fans have good investigative skills, but that companies like ZTE are bad at keeping their products a secret. On the phone itself, the Nubia Z17 mini comes in an all-metallic body with a 5.2-inch FHD resolution panel that also has a slight 2.5D curve on the glass for that seamless experience when gliding the finger across the screen. Even the contrast of the screen is quite impressive, coming in at 1500:1.

However, the main USP is not the screen of this supposed mid-ranger of a phone, but instead, it is the dual camera set up that we are now used to seeing on almost every Chinese and Korean smartphone out there. ZTE didn’t want to be left out in the trend and they have a good system in place – two 13MP cameras on the rear of the phone, with one being a monochromatic camera and the other being a colour sensor. The optics on the front are just as great, with a magnificent 16MP camera for a selfie camera that provides great wide-angle shots, having an 80-degree wide scope of view for group selfies and decent portrait shots as well with an aperture of f/2.0.

Mobi Picker has found that the phone is also going through an active phase of marketing, being endorsed by Cristiano Ronaldo himself. This factor alone should probably be a good reason why buyers will want this phone. Interestingly, ZTE wants to aim this phone at different segments with two configurations. One configuration will come with the Snapdragon 652 with 4GB of RAM and the other configuration will come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 chipset with a whopping 6GB of RAM. Both will have robust storage configurations at 64GB standard as well as room for expandable storage as well. It’s a hybrid dual-SIM solution as well. We don’t see why ZTE could not add the beefier Snapdragon 820 or 821 processors into a phone that looks this good and has very impressive internals.

What will perhaps be a deal-breaker for most is that the software is stuck at Android Marshmallow for now and has as battery capacity topped at 2950mAh. It won’t give the best battery life, so users will need a spare power bank in hand.

Will Ronaldo’s name be enough to pick up ZTE’s new Nubia Z17 mini smartphone in sales or will the company have to pay the penalty for lack of innovation? The phone is currently out and will cost anywhere between $247 for the lower configuration and $290 for the high-end configuration for those interested.
