ZTE adds another mid-ranger to its line – the V870

The largest phone manufacturer in the world has just released another mid-ranger to the masses, offering a cheap handset for budget specs. The ZTE V870 is the latest phone to be launched by the company even after having been slapped with a $1.3 billion fine a few months ago, showing that growth does not stop because of a simple fine.

According to reports, the mid-range budget handset will feature a 5.5-inch screen with 1080p resolution. It will be run by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 processor which is an octa-core CPU clocked at 1.4 GHz. The RAM on the device consists of a massive 4GB, which should be plenty and storage as well as a generous 64GB for the price range. The phone also comes with a fingerprint scanner along with a microSD card slot.

In terms of optics, the phone will feature a 16MP camera on the back with an 8MP camera on the front. The body of the phone is a metallic body and also houses the phone’s 3,000 mAh battery along with two large speakers, retailing for about $400. The phone is currently only available in its own homeland but it might see a release to foreign shores in the coming months. ZTE has not commented or denied on the future release of the phone outside its home market.

Gear reports that the phone will feature Android Nougat out of the box. It will also come with ZTE’s proprietary Android skin over Nougat. As far as connectivity goes, it will feature 4G with VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS with A-GPS. While most other offerings in this price range do not offer expandable memory as commonly as ZTE does with its offerings, the one thing that ZTE could have implemented into their phone would be a better CPU, since the Snapdragon 435 is still an entry-level CPU which won’t be able to provide as much power for games and multi-tasking as much as a Snapdragon 660 would offer. ZTE could have easily upped the processor a little bit to at atleast make it a more formidable opponent to the current mid-rangers in the market, most notably, the Motorola G5.

As far as build and quality and looks are taken into consideration, the phone looks premium, but still lacks USB Type-C ports and instead goes for a last-gen micro USB port. At least the phone comes with a headphone jack. Other options like the new Xiaomi Redmi would be a much better proposition than the V870, which seems like a completely missed opportunity.
