Nintendo’s first smartphone title Super Mario Run is launching on Android. The game is available for pre-registration on the Google Play Store.
Super Mario Run was launched on December 15 for Apple devices. Since then speculations on an Android release have been fodder for rumor mills.
“Attn @Android users: Pre-Register now to be notified when the official #SuperMarioRun is available on @GooglePlay,” tweeted Nintendo of America.
The app, which broke several records set by the release of another Nintendo game ‘Pokémon GO’, started great but slowly lost steam.
Among many reasons for the app’s poor performance is the $9.99 fee that players must pay if they want to access the full game beyond just the first three levels.
The game however ranks as top of free downloads in 88 countries, having peaked at 138 on December 17. When it was launched, it was downloaded 40m times in the first four days it was available. It took Pokémon Go 19 days to hit 50m.
The Android version of Super Mario Run is expected to launch some time in January, 2017. Android users who have pre-registered will receive a notification when it can be downloaded.
According to Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima, the Japanese multinational company will be releasing two to three smartphone games a year from 2017.
