In a new addition to the various forms of set top boxes that have arrived in the market of late, marking an end to the traditional means of accessing TV content, Sling TV have launched a new Player Box called AirTV to mediate the gap between accessing free over the air channels and their own paid subscription.
Essentially those who want to rid themselves of cable wires for accessing their channels can now just have a box and through a special digital antenna receive the signal for locally available channels. That’s apart from the paid subscription streaming service that Sling TV already offers their subscribers. The company is soon going to be launching the product, having announced it on the website and the product listing for the box has already been spotted on e-retail websites like Amazon.
Users will also be able to stream Netflix through the box, which means users can have their entertainment options all in one single appliance. Not much else has been added to the specs list of the box or how much it’ll cost or when it will be available. Even if it’s going to be available worldwide isn’t a surety. But a release sometime around early 2017 is very likely.
It’s a pretty cool box if it’ll let users access free local content over the air and also allow them to stream through the company’s own listed channels for a price. It will diminish the use of multiple boxes and remotes for accessing all the media content.
We wouldn’t be surprised if companies later would integrate the box set into smart home TVs to make the process even more convenient and save shelf space altogether. It’ll also remind people that there used to be a time when they watched localized content on a TV set. It’s sure to bring back some nostalgic feels.
The player will also support voice commands so users don’t need to rub their popcorn-stained hands on the remotes. Pretty neat!
