About 500,000 Note 7 replacement devices have arrived in the US.
Samsung on Tuesday announced the availability of devices at major retail stores. From September 21, customers can start exchanging their Note 7s, according to the official press note.
In addition to the replacement devices, Samsung also announced the rollout of a software update for new Note 7 devices.
Samsung said the software update will display a green battery icon on the status bar found on the top right hand of the screen. The green icon indicates that consumers have a new Galaxy Note 7 with an unaffected battery.
“Working hand in hand with the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission), we are delivering as promised and moving quickly to educate consumers about the recall and make new Note 7s available,” said Tim Baxter, president of Samsung Electronics America.
“New devices will be in stores no later than tomorrow and we will continue to take the necessary actions to ensure users are powering down and immediately exchanging recalled devices,” he added
The latest update also has a safety notice prompt screen for those who are yet to exchange their Note 7. The notice will appear every time a user powers up or charges their device. “Your safety is our highest priority. Power down and stop using this phone. The battery may overheat posing a fire or burn risk,” the notice states.
Close to 1 million Note 7 devices were sold in the US. The flaw in the battery that causes the phone to explode, however involves more than 2.5 million devices worldwide.
Samsung is reaching out to Note7 owners through multiple touchpoints, including social media, marketing and in-store communication, urging users to replace their devices.
