The OnePlus 5 has so far until now only been a rumor and somewhat of an urban legend in the tech world. After the runaway success of the OnePlus 3 and the 3T, it became apparent that what would follow, would be a device of massive proportions, but nothing was set in stone just yet. Our anticipation and speculation was all put to rest recently after the official model number of the new OnePlus 5 made its way to the internet in the form of a leak from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
According to a report by 9to5Google, the name of the OnePlus handset shown in the certification is indeed, the A5000. This could well be the OnePlus 5, since previous codenames include the A0001 OnePlus 1, A2000 (OnePlus 2) and A3000 (OnePlus 3). The Chinese phone-maker has skipped the number 4, because in Chinese tradition, that number is associated to death. In order to fill in the gap between the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 5 however, the company launched the 3T which could be the unofficial fourth iteration of the company’s flagships.
Reports have predicted that the specs of the OnePlus 5 should include a 5.5-inch 2K display with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor with up to 8GB of RAM and a 23-megapixel dual-lens camera with optical image stabilization and optical zoom as well as a 3,000mAh battery powering it all. If all of this is in fact true, we just hope that the company adds a slightly beefier battery. The specifications seem just about right, knowing the company’s long-standing tradition of loading its flagships to the neck with the best of the current generation specs.
Android Authority suspects that the phone will also come with a rear fingerprint sensor, which may or may not be a bad idea, considering that the S8’s rear fingerprint sensor is a hit-or-miss affair. AA is hopeful, however, that the phone will hit the mainstream soon enough, so new buyers who are pining for a new OnePlus 3T might want to wait for a bit until the OnePlus 5 hits online stores. It seems very likely that we may here an official word on the phone any time in the next couple of months or so.
What we are really hoping for OnePlus to bring on their next flagship is a more durable body that is dust and water resistant. Now that would be the flagship killer that everyone has been wanting. Plus, considering that OnePlus’s optics are one of the finest out there, underwater shots could be a treat!
