Smartwatches show no sign of slowing down as traditional watch brands are now joining the trend like German luxury watch maker Montblanc which unveiled its first ever Android Wear smartwatch – the Summit.
The news comes just days after Tag Heuer, another luxury watch maker, introduced to the world its second generation TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45 at an absurd price of $1,400.
Now, Montblanc is up on its feet for the transition from old-school luxury watch making to compete in the wearable market that is dominated by big names like Apple, Samsung, and LG.
Features of The Summit
Montblanc’s Summit sports a case diameter of 46mm and a circular 1.39-inch AMOLED screen with 400×400 pixel display. This luxury smartwatch runs on Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor combined with 4GB of storage and 512MB of RAM, a Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity and 300mAh battery which will run an entire day.
Though missing some big features like NFC capability, the Summit does come with a variety of sensors, including an E-compass, gyroscope, accelerometer, heart rate monitor and a barometer, among others.
It may not be as sophisticated as TAG Heuer’s Connected, but the Summit lets you swap straps, as well, with a standard 22mm swapping straps initially priced at $100 for a standalone calf leather strap.
Consumers in the UK and US will be able to buy the smartwatch starting this May. At $890, it might seem a little expensive, but for its high grade materials, hardware and craftsmanship, it is worth the cost.
The Summit comes in different versions – stainless steel, dual-colored steel and silver titanium. All versions are water and dust resistant. Let’s hope Montblanc’s latest wearable can catch up to the big boys out there.
