The new router incorporates Mu-mimo and Tri-stream 160 Technology

The AC3200 WRT Gigabit MU-MIMO Wi-Fi Router is a powerful new addition to the WRT line-up. The next generation router is equipped with Tri-Stream 160 technology, making it the fastest dual band router available in the market.

Giving details on the Tri-Stream technology, Linksys said the WRT3200ACM is Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) certified to allow operation at 160 MHz channel width in the 5 GHz band. The WRT3200ACM apparently uses three streams at 160 MHz channel width to drive data at 867 Mbps per stream, providing up to 2.6 Gbps.

The other highlight besides the Tri-Stream 160 is the Mu-Mimo capability. The WRT3200ACM will allow home or office users to enjoy 4K and HD TV streaming or other high bandwidth applications to multiple devices all at the same time.

“We just made the WRT even more powerful, and equipped it with even more features as well as kept true to our word with Open Source support,” said Vince La Duca, Linksys product manager. He noted that Linksys has increased the processor clock speed to 1.8 GHz, added up to 512MB DDR3 flash memory and kept the eSATA and USB ports without any changes.

Linksys makes it easy to customize the networking functions and to optimize the router for privacy, VoIP, and small office applications. It can also be optimized for gaming, security, or for commercial applications. For instance, users can build virtual private networks (VPN) for secure data transfers, create a web server, create a hotspot, perform advanced network traffic management and much more.

Priced at $280, the router allows users to take advantage of OpenWrt to select and install additional features on top of pre-compiled firmware. It allows to fully customize the feature set of their router to suit particular needs. Additionally, the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi app has been updated to provide more features to manage Wi-Fi via cloud on the go.

On the hardware, the WRT3200ACM comes with enterprise-grade 80211.ac Wi-Fi radios , enterprise-grade 1.8GHz dual-core ARM-based CPU, 256 MB Flash, 512 MB DDR3 RAM, SOHO-grade 5-port Ethernet switch, 4 Gigabit LAN ports, 1 USB 2.0 port and 1 USB 3.0 port.
