Google Pixel 2 rumors: Three variants coming, will feature Snapdragon 835 chipset

The Pixel 2 has been under quite a lot of buzz since the first Pixel got released. With LG, Samsung, and soon HTC having already established their latest flagships, Google’s attempt this year is shaping up to be an amazing device based on the rumours floating about.

So far, we know that the Pixel 2 will come in three iterations, which have been named “Muskie”, “Walleye” and “Taimen” respectively. Right now, there is no confirmation on what the third variant will be like, and which one of the three will be the smaller of the bigger of them. Fortunately, it has been found that all three of the variants will be packing the Snapdragon 835. The three phones were spotted on WinFuture. This means all three variants can take on the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus together.

Google did confirm that they will be releasing their new Pixels sometime in the Fall of this year and have announced that their phones will be directly competing in the high-end sector, so we can obviously expect the phones to take on the best of the competition that currently is available in the market. Other specs that the phones should come bundled with include flexible OLED displays made by LG. This comes fresh off speculation when Google invested $876 million in LG for the production of the panels. We see a strategic partnership in the works, but we’ll wait for the finished product to appear in order to make further confirmations.

While some speculate that the phones will also omit the headphone jack, things are not quite clear on that front yet. But it seems most likely that Google would not like to anger its long-standing fan-base. Optics and waterproofing are on the cards this year for the new Pixels. According to Digital Trends, Google did not have time to waterproof their first iteration of the Pixel but should get down to delivering an IP67 or IP68 rated device. This could also be the reason why the phone will be a little more expensive, perhaps by $50 more.

The Google Pixel 2 will no doubt be a power-house phone. How it plans on doing that, will be the differentiating factor however. Samsung has already started work on creating the Galaxy S9 for next year, even partnering with Qualcomm for creating the Snapdragon 845, with this year’s flagship already been released less than a month ago. With the race, already being started this soon in the industry, it will be interesting to see what a company like Google can muster up.
