More demand for 4G devices in India; 18.2 mn shipped in 2nd quarter 2016

There is a growing demand for 4G devices in India. The second quarter of this year, from April to June, saw over over 18.2 million devices shipped across the country.

According to CyberMedia Research (CMR), the second quarter of 2016 saw an increase of 2.8 million devices when compared with 15.4 million shipped in the first quarter.

Samsung, Micromax and LYF are the top three LTE devices players with 40%, 9% and 8% market shares, according to CMR.

Samsung, Micromax and Reliance’s LYF brands are the leaders, with 41 per cent, 8.62 per cent and 8.54 per cent market share respectively

While that remains the figure for the smartphone segment, in tablets, Samsung is followed by Apple and iBall. Samsung holds first position with 40 per cent, Apple stood second with 30.79 per cent and iBall ranked third with 8.3 per cent market share.

However, within Data Cards, Samsung, ZTE, Micromax and iBall were the only players shipping 4G devices.

“We expect this year to end with around 125 million cumulative 4G devices and Jio would want this base to touch 250-300 million by 2017,” said Faisal Kawoosa, Principal Analyst of CMR.

According to CMR, LYF devices are witnessing a decline and it may not remain a leading brand in the coming quarters.

The decline in LYF shipments is an opportunity for second tier brands like Vivo, Oppo, LeEco, Gionee, OnePlus, Asus and InFocus to double their shipments, suggests CMR.

Last week, Reliance launched the ambitious Jio 4G network that promises free voice calls and roaming as well as the world’s cheapest data rates. Jio’s data, voice, and video will be available fully free for everyone, until the end of the year.

Jio’s 4G network covers 18,000 cities and towns, and over 2 lakh villages.

”The biggest challenge for Jio would be to double the users actually having a 4G device in hand,” says Faisal. “We expect this year to end with around 125 million cumulative 4G devices and Jio would want this base to touch 250-300 million by 2017 end. Only then, it can expect some decent numbers (70-80 million) of subscribers on Jio services of this potential base by the end of 2017.”
