Smartron is a relatively unknown name in the technology world. It may sound like one of the characters from Transformers, but it is actually a little-known Indian-operated company that is an OEM and Is about to delve into some big markets after having expanded well in its home country, India.
According to sources, the company will soon be entering Latin America, Russia, Africa as well as the Middle East. The brand is commonly known for its smartphones and its convertible tablets. After having announced a decent fiscal revenue recently, the company now aims to launch a new product every 45 days starting mid-May in India. Overall the company is expanding its line-up of products, now offering Wi-Fi routers, wearable bands, ultrabooks and electric bikes. The company recently made an acquisition of an electric vehicle manufacturer from Chennai called Volta. Using acquisitions such as this, the company will get to broaden its offerings and create new products more frequently.
Although the company is fully operational in the Middle East and Africa, it plans to make its presence felt in a more active manner by creating new avenues for production and innovation. The team behind the company is a 250-member group of employees and the company aims to double that number this year as it aims for business development. The company has also managed to rope in the head of marketing at Lenovo-owned Motorola in India, Amit Boni, who now serves as Vice President of the company and will be leading the development of the company.
Smartron was first established in 2014 and the company has already raised more than Rs 250 crore in the last quarter alone. Over the course of the next three years, the company will be investing close to Rs 1500 crores towards setting up of data centres, R&D units, manufacturing and engineering centres. The company is also working in collaboration with Foxconn for the production of some of its products. It is further looking for more acquisition in order to enter various markets such as healthcare, smart homes, energy and infrastructure among others to establish a strong portfolio presence.
Cricket star Sachin Tendulkar is among others on the board of directors, being a strategic partner for the company. He will also be a part of the next smartphone launch of company, aptly called the SRT-Phone which was supposed to be a follow-up to the T-Phone that the company had earlier released sometime around last year. The Sachin-branded smartphone will be focused on camera quality, by the looks of the promotional content and should probably be a hit in the budget segment.
