While the competition has been doling out newer, bezel-less displays on every segment, from entry to premium, Asus has only released one model so far with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The ZenFone Max Plus (M1) will now be the company’s second.
The new phone will feature a large 5.7-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1080×2160 FHD+ panel. Considering the model name, the phone’s strength will lie more in the battery compartment more than the internal specifications, which are mediocre at best. The company has also added a dual-camera sensor on the back. And the battery on the phone will come in at a satisfying 4,130mAh. The phone is reminiscent in terms of design to the new OnePlus 5T, with the exception in size, and having slightly larger top and bottom bezels.
The phone has so far been announced on for Russia till now and there have not been any plans given by the company regarding the release date internationally. It took a while for certain phones of the new ZenFone 4 series to release outside of Russia, so we may not be able to see the phones out in the wild any time soon. Looking at the internal specs, it seems that the phone will fall in the budget category and retail for somewhere around the $250 price range.
As mentioned in a report from BGR, the phone will feature the MediaTek MT6750T chipset. There will be two variants of the phone – one with 16GB of internal storage and 2GB of RAM and another with 32GB of internal storage with 3GB of RAM. There is also a microSD card slot for expansion to up to 256GB. The fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone boasts a super-fast unlock rate of 0.3 seconds. The dual cameras feature a 16MP main lens and a secondary 8MP lens on the rear. On the front, is an 8MP camera sensor with an aperture of f/2.0.
The device comes with Android Nougat 7.0 and ZenUI 4.0 skin. It also comes with Asus’s proprietary PowerMaster app that can supposedly double the battery life of the smartphone. There are three colour options that the handset will be available in – Deapsea Black, Sunlight Gold and Azure Silver. While not too impressive, the company will likely have a limited demographic interested in the handset, owing to other popular smartphones such as the Moto G5S and the Xiaomi Mi A1, which feature more capable internals and features.
