Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+: Rumour Roundup

With 2017 done and dusted, Samsung will be looking forward to releasing their first smartphone flagships of the year – the S9 and the S9+. With the rumours already abound since the release of the Note 8 last year, the excitement about the upcoming smartphones will be hard to put down, since the release date is just a couple of months away.

According to reports, we can expect Samsung to further slim the bezels of the Galaxy S9 and S9+. Of course, we will be seeing the return of curved glass and curved displays this time around. Samsung will be changing the position of the fingerprint sensor on the back from the side of the camera to the centre below the camera module. Samsung will likely be differentiating its two flagship variants this time around, with the S9+ offering dual cameras while the S9 will likely offer a single camera.

The Mirror supposedly got a hold of a leaked image of the phones showing their backs, which look similar to the outgoing Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, with the main difference being the location of the fingerprint sensor. The larger phone also features two cameras in a vertical orientation, unlike the Note 8’s version. The images do not necessarily prove anything, but should still be taken with a pinch of salt but they do hold a certain amount of truth as to how we can expect the phones to look.

Other upgrades will include the addition of a new Snapdragon 845 processor or its equivalent, the Exynos 9810 chipset. The phones should also come with 18.5:9 aspect ratio screens in the form of Infinity Displays. Surprisingly, a headphone jack is also expected to come with the phone when it is released eventually.

Like its predecessors, the phones are expected to come with water resistance, the Bixby button and the iris scanner that we saw last on the previous models. This time around, however, the Iris Scanners are expected to feature a 3MP camera instead of a 2MP for clearer scanning of the facial features. While Samsung has never boasted of having dual-speakers on their smartphones, there could be a small possibility that the company might add that to the S9 and S9+. The phones, just as always, will also come with expandable storage options and memory configurations that should include 6GB of RAM as standard.

Considering that Samsung is looking to re-enter the wireless charging market to compete with the AirPower from Apple, so we can expect the wireless charging capabilities on the phone to be slightly better than last time. Regarding pricing, expect the phone to be one of the more expensive offerings of the year, easily crossing the $700 mark.
