Xiaomi is aiming to be hot on the heels of many of the market’s competitors in the ultra-portable laptop segment. After the runaway success of its previous foray into the Ultrabook market with the Mi Notebook Air in the summer, the company is now launching a new variant in its line-up – the Mi Notebook Air 4G.
The new variant will feature an updated spec-sheet, with the additional of being 4G LTE compatible. This means it can connect to any available network in the vicinity if there’s no Wi-Fi, which is a big win for those of us always on the go and wanting to send that important email or post that crucial update. It’ll retain the all-metal body design and will come in two very closely similar screen sizes – a 12.5-incher and a 13.3-incher.
The former of the two will feature a modest Intel M series chipset and 4GB of RAM with 128GB of SSD storage, but the latter will have a powerful Core i7 CPU, with an Nvidia 940MX GPU, capping the RAM at 8GB and storage at 256GB SSD. Ports on offer will a single USB Type-C port, two USB 3.0 ports and an HDMI port. Both of the models will also feature Dolby Digital Surround.
These specs are not bad at all, considering the thickness of these laptops which is only about 15mm thick. It’s also apparent that Xiaomi wanted to offer a more functional and just as portable solution as an alternative to the MacBook. And we’re pretty sure it’s on point here. The smaller laptop will be sold for $677 while the bigger one will be sold for close to a $1000. Both laptops will also come with an expandable SSD slot for more storage should the user prefer.
Both notebooks should be operable for up to 10 hours on a full charge. The company has also collaborated with China Mobile to offer 48GB of free data every month for one year on every purchase of the notebook. It’s not a bad deal, but if it’s being shipped from China, Xiaomi will have to partner with other carriers around the world for the telecom service but we’re not sure about availability or whether it’ll be applicable for non-China residents.
This is going to sell like hot cakes.
