Two months after launch, India’s Reliance Jio is world’s largest data carrier

Within two months of launch, India’s Reliance Jio has become the world’s biggest telecom company in terms of data traffic.

Reliance Jio kicked off its commercial services in India on September 5

Reliance Jio currently has a data traffic of 16,000 TB per day. It is followed by 12,000 TB carried by China Mobile and Vodafone Global with 6,000 TB per day.

Not surprisingly, just a month since launch, the company claimed to have added 16 million new subscribers. And each day, it continues to add close to 1 million each subscribers.

The company’s popular Welcome Offer of free voice calls and data is the sole reason for the success. While voice calling on Jio will be free for life, data would be charged at economical rates after the welcome offer ends.

Latest reports state that the Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries will keep the welcome offer till December 31. Analysts state the Welcome Offer, which was launched in early September, could even go up to March, 2017 to meet the 100 million subscriber target.

But the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) guidelines clearly state that a telecom operator cannot offer a promotional offer for more than 90 days. So does that mean, Jio can’t continue the offer after December 3?

Though Jio had an impressive start with all tall claims, it appears that its speed does not put it at the top three spot. According to Trai, the company stands at the fifth rank when it comes to data speed.

Jio registered a speed of 6.2 mbps, while Airtel recorded an average of 11.4 megabits per second (mbps), Reliance Communications registered 7.9 mbps, Idea 7.6 mbps, and Vodafone with an average download speed of 7.3 mbps.

All that aside, Reliance Jio is the new disruption in the world of telecom. Being the biggest investment in the history of Reliance, the service will not only change the 4G scene in India, but also will significantly contribute to the company’s profits.
