Sony Xperia XZ Premium nabs ‘Best New Smartphone Award’ at the MWC 2017

Some good news for Sony, now that they had made their presence felt at the MWC 2017, have been awarded the Best New Smartphone of 2017 by GSMA – the body that hosts the MWC as well as the Global Mobile Awards for tech companies over a multitude of categories.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium awarded the best new smartphone at MWC 2017

This time, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium was awarded with the honour of being crowned the best new smartphone. The handset features a 4K display, a 3230 mAh battery, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of built-in storage. It also features Quick Charge and Android Nougat. The phone has great optics as well, perhaps the best yet, that the company has offered so far, with a 13MP sensor on the front for wide-angled selfies and a 19MP camera that can shoot at 960 fps on the back for amazing picture quality. The handset is one among the two announced flagships of 2017 that will feature the Snapdragon 835.

It’s no surprise that the Xperia XZ Premium received such a distinction as it definitely was one of the best-looking phones at the conference and came with flagship specs to boot. Sony did whatever they could to make sure that their next flagship device, despite being so expensive when it comes out and only going to be released in Spring of this year, the phone’s prospects look quite promising. Sony had a struggling year in 2016 when none of its phones fared very well amongst the iPhones and S7s of that year. This is good for Sony as this is just what they needed to get back on their feet. The reassurance that they are headed on the right track will hopefully encourage them to keep innovating more powerful devices the next time around.

But the company does have its work cut out for itself, with the upcoming flagships not holding back. The XZ Premium had just a normal release, without fanfare or any major teasers. That probably will suck out the hype surrounding such a magnificently built phone. We are also expecting that once the Galaxy S8 gets outed, people will have long forgotten about Sony’s offering. Let’s hope Sony keeps the fire burning.

Last year, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge won the award for best smartphone of 2016, with hands-down the most incredible hardware to grace the internals of a smartphone. If Samsung’s next offering is any indicator, we can expect there to be quite a bit of competition looming for smartphone makers in the coming months.
