This smart pet door can be controlled with an app

Got a pet that likes to take itself for walkies? You might just be able to put a stop to it with SureFlap’s new app-controlled pet door.

The pet door is designed for use by cats and small dogs (SureFlap)

Tracking is increasingly being used to monitor the whereabouts of pets. And that’s exactly where this new smartphone-controlled pet door comes in. Thanks to SureFlap, you can now monitor when your kitty leaves the house and when it hits back the crib.

The UK-based firm already has a range of chip-implanted products like feeders and doors that only the right pet with the chip or RFID collars can access, thereby alerting the pet owner and allowing them more app-controlled actions remotely.

The pet door is all set to launch this summer. The app will enable the user to set “curfew times” for pets while also letting the user schedule the grounding from anywhere. The owner will receive app notifications whenever the pet enters the house or decides to go out for a walk. The access to the pet door app can be shared with multiple persons too.

The pet door, developed using the Xively platform, is the first IoT device from SureFlap. It comes with a price tag of £119.99 for the pet door while the hub to which the ethernet port is to be connected costs £49.99.

The pet door needs an internet connection with a minimum speed of 1 Mbps and runs on 4 x C batteries that can power the device for an average of six months, or up to a year under normal usage.

SureFlap claims that the user’s’ private information is secured using AWS’ ELB service that uses industry level encryption in addition to the communication between the hub and the pet door being encrypted. Users of existing SureFlap pet doors will, however; not be able to use the app as the old products lack the communication modules required, but the company promises a timely upgrade option.
