Samsung’s latest Ultrabook series is all about being light. The company just unveiled the Notebook 9 for 2018 and the new models pack the latest processors, topped with Samsung’s own little bells and whistles to take on the likes of the LG Gram and other competitors in the market currently.
The laptops will be powered exclusively by the new 8th generation of Intel Core i7 processors. This, along with 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of SSD storage in tow will bring some of the best performance that we will get to see on a Samsung laptop till date. There are two sizes of the laptop – a 13.3-inch one and a 15.6-inch one respectively. The latter can also be configured to fit a dedicated GPU, being the lightweight but effective NVIDIA MX150 mobile GPU unit which offers up to 2GB of VRAM. Knowing Samsung, they haven’t just optimized the hardware experience for maximum performance, but have also brought in their own flavours and expertise in the screen department as well.
According to reports, the laptop will feature a RealViewDispaly, as Samsung calls it and what we get is a 1080p display with a 95% sRGB color coverage. The display also comes with an impressive 500 nits of brightness that should be adequate for outdoor usage as well. But that’s not all that Samsung have added to the system. There is a third variant of the laptop which is also a 13.3-inch sized device. The speciality of the laptop is that it comes with the much-loved S-Pen that we are used to seeing on the company’s Note series of phablets and tablets.
The laptop itself is a convertible, thanks to the 360-degree hinge that lets users hold the laptop in tent mode, tablet mode as well as the regular laptop mode. Battery life is a respectable 75Wh on the 15-inch variant. The S-Pen 13.3-inch laptop has a smaller battery compared to the regular 13.3-inch laptop at just 39Wh.
Further, the laptop comes with the regular set of ports on the laptop variants, which include a USB Type-C port, USB 3.0 and HDMI ports with microSD card support as well as a 3.5mm jack. The new 9 series of laptops is also built using Metal12 chassis which the company claims is extremely durable and at the same time, is lighter than its predecessors. Unfortunately, the pricing for the laptops has not been announced yet, but they should be under the competitive price bracket as very few ultra-books can boast their own GPU or even the expertise that the S-Pen brings to the table.
