Samsung has only recently, filed for trademark for a brand called the Galaxy X. The company filed the trademark at the Korean Intellectual Property Rights Information Service (KIPRIS). Because of this new information, rumours are rife about earlier reports that the company will releasing their upcoming foldable smartphone.
Samsung have been working on the foldable smartphone concept since the last few years, with numerous prototypes sprouting up at their exhibitions, along with a few commercials also being produced, to showcase what the company has in mind. Samsung’s new filing of the name for Galaxy X hints at what is to come from Samsung as it has been rumoured that the company will be calling their foldable handsets under that name.
Some might not be surprised about this series of events, since Samsung has produced many curved screen phones before as well. This particular range, if it is believed to be true, will have foldable-display which flexes and can be put back. So, the concept is not the same as what we have been used to seeing in the Samsung Galaxy Edge series of phones of late.
At some point in time, it was also rumoured that Samsung had scrapped the plans to develop a completely foldable phone, but the company did in fact, pick up development for the same. The company had also created various prototype designs for references of a foldable smartphone. The internet believes that the first handset to be released under the Galaxy X brand name, will be released earliest, on the third quarter of 2017 or early 2018. Coincidentally, the Q3 space for the year is usually taken up by Samsung’s Unbox event for their Note line. So, we may either see the Galaxy X take over the Note’s mantle or have it become a part of the line-up altogether.
Previously known as Project Valley, the Galaxy X seems to have a certain specialty to its name. Hopefully, it will be a more conceptual series of phones than the current range that is a part of the Samsung portfolio. Android Headlines also reports that the company has been researching various display technologies as well as components such as hinges and other unique design elements that will be needed for foldable mobile devices. The ‘X’ in the Galaxy brand will be a symbol for the company, to show that this particular series is pushing the boundaries of the generic smartphone route and will feature newer innovations than previously known.
