French smartphone maker Alcatel is rumored to launch a modular smartphone at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 next month.
Details are very sparse at the moment, but on the surface it appears the device will have modular functionalities on the rear panel, just like some of the rivals that are already launched in the market.
Alcatel’s upcoming modular smartphone will have replaceable back covers
Modular concept is yet to take off, with Google cancelling Pro Ara and the LG G5 which has failed to live up to the expectations.
A Hungarian report claims Alcatel’s device will have a mod attached on the back of the phone. It is also rumored to have a replaceable back cover that will have an LED array that will glow in sync with the music played.
Could be the Idol 5?
The modular phone is tipped to include a 13MP rear camera with dual-tone LED flash and a MediaTek processor. It is likely that this might be the Idol 5 Android device.
It was during last year’s MWC that Alcatel launched the Idol 4. It sported a metal and glass unibody design with 5.2-inch IPS display and a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Under the hood, you had a Snapdragon 617 processor, 3GB RAM, 16GB storage and a 2,610mAh battery.
For this year’s MWC that will be held in Barcelona from February 27 to March 2, Alcatel is rumored to launch as many as five devices. The last we heard it was Sony that was prepping a series of devices. Now Alcatel might join the race.
