If latest reports are to be believed, Apple’s next smartwatch will feature an in-built LTE modem chip that will support cellular connectivity.
A Bloomberg report has cited people familiar with the matter suggesting an Apple Watch that will be able to connect directly to cellular networks through an LTE chip embedded in them.
Apple’s smartwatches connect wirelessly to an iPhone to stream music, download directions in maps, and send messages. With LTE connection, users now can download songs or use apps without using their iPhones.
Bloomberg report confirms that Intel will be the supplier for the LTE modems that will feature on the new Watch.
The Cupertino-based giant meanwhile is said to be in talks with carriers in the US and Europe about offering the cellular version of the smartwatch. AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile reportedly plans to sell the LTE version of the Watch in the US. Speculations are that the smartwatch will begin selling by end of 017.
With regard to software, Apple already had announced the highlights of the WatchOS 4 that is coming in the fall. It will be integrated with Siri voice-enabled features, ability to connect to gym equipment, send payments in iMessage and display news stories.
Apple had earlier announced that it will launch the Apple Watch Series 2 alongside the iPhone 7 line in September. We are not sure if the LTE version would launch alongside the new Watch models. In any case, Apple’s attempt at creating a smartwatch with LTE connectivity is one in the right direction. The company’s competitors like Samsung and Huawei already have introduced similar wearables in the market. But better late than never.
