Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 and 630: Know what’s new in the mobile platforms

Qualcomm has introduced two new mobile platforms that offers better performance, enhanced photography and longer battery life. Th Snapdragon 660 and Snapdragon 630 will be succeeding the Snapdragon 653 and Snapdragon 626 respectively.

The new Snapdragon 660 and 630 are based on 14nm FinFET process and provide 4K video capture and playback capabilities. Additionally, they offer 8GB maximum memory and Vulkan API support. Qualcomm announced the mobile platforms at its Snapdragon Tech Day event in Singapore on Tuesday.

The company divulged that the Snapdragon 660 mobile platform supports displays up to QHD (2K) resolution, while the 630 supports FHD/QXGA (1080p). The Snapdragon 660 is the first 600-series Snapdragon SoC to have Kryo CPU. It has 8x Kryo 260 CPU cores clocked at 2.2GHz. The GPU is Adreno 512, and is 30% faster than the Adreno 510 on the 653.

Both the platforms will begin shipping towards the end of this month. According to Qualcomm’s Kedar Kondap, Vice President, Product Management, the new platforms bring Kryo CPU, X12 modem, and machine learning algorithm for the first time to the 600-tier mobile platforms.

For more interesting details, the Snapdragon 660 and 630 support the company’s Spectra 160 camera ISP that helps improve photography by producing more natural skin tones. The chipsets improve on power efficiency and higher output for dual camera smartphones.

They further feature a Snapdragon X12 modem that is claimed to offer up to 600Mbps of downlink data rates. The Snapdragon 660 comes with support for 2×2 MU-MIMO 802.11ac Wi-Fi. More importantly, the new chipsets is to come with Qualcomm Quick Charge 4 technology. The company claims it can offer up to 5 hours of talk time in just 5 minutes of charging and up to 50 percent battery life in just 15 minutes of charging.

Devices with the Snapdragon 660 can be expected to be unveiled by end of June while Snapdragon 630 devices can be expected to be announced in Q3.
