Olympus has released a new point-and-shoot camera that is inherently rugged by design. The Tough TG-5 is waterproof and even freezeproof, making it perfect for outdoor adventures and just about everything.
The compact camera is part of the TG-series lineup and offers better performance than the TG-4 that launched in 2015. On TG-5, Olympus has fitted a 12MP CMOS sensor with a f/2.0 wide angle lens and 25-100mm focal length.
While the sensor might seem dwarfed when juxtaposed with TG-4’s 16MP, Olympus says it was intentional as the picture processing tech in it renders quality better than the predecessor, with higher ISOs. The TruePic VIII Image Processor also makes it perfect for shooting in low light or under water.
TG-5 boasts a 4x optical zoom, a max ISO of 12,800, built-in GPS, a 3-inch LCD and WiFi. And the gadget is not only waterproof to depths of 50 feet, Olympus says it’s also shockproof from 7 feet, crushproof to 220 pounds of force and freezeproof down to 14°F.
For video shooting, the rugged camera offers 4K Movie that makes it possible to shoot Ultra HD video at four times the resolution of Full HD video.
The camera will be available in red and black and will begin shipping in June. It will carry a price tag of $449.
