NVIDIA Shield Pro 2017 is out, brings 500GB storage and microSD reader

Power users rejoice! The NVIDIA Shield 2017’s Pro version is finally available for purchase. The standard variant was the only one available up until now, while fans were awaiting the newer, beefier Pro version that packs some very beneficial features.

NVIDIA Shield Pro can be purchased with retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Newegg and B&H (NVIDIA)

Not only making this a set-top-box, but now a full-fledged gaming console, the NVIDIA Shield Pro adds just what was missing – 500GB of internal storage as well as a microUSB port with a microSD card slot for more expansion. None of these connectivity features were available on the standard NVIDIA Shield 2017, according to a report by Ubergizmo.

The Shield Pro will however maintain all the similar specs as per the standard edition, but buyers will appreciate the added advantage of the extra storage space. This puts the set-top-box at the top of the list, being the smartest and most powerful TV streamer out there today. The standard version was already the top of the table even before this one. Like the standard variant, the Pro will also come with a controller and a remote. According to Android Community, the set top box will come with a price tag of $299, which seems pretty decent when talking about the hardware. The device will be available at major outlets like Micro Center, Newegg, B&H, Fry’s, Amazon, Best Buy and the official NVIDIA Store.

NVIDIA also did promise the Nougat update for the Shield streamer as well as an update to the SHIELD K1 tablet that should arrive a little later in the year. Thankfully, there has not been any design discrepancy with the Shield Pro and it looks just as good as the original. This model also comes with the Plex Media Server, enabling users to access files from anywhere outside of the local storage. Even the packaging reads ‘4K Media Server’ on the front, hinting at the possibilities that this TV streamer is capable of.

Another treat for users is that NVIDIA is bringing some very good titles to its GeForce NOW library such as Sleeping Dogs and Hitman: Absolution soon to the platform. Next week, it will be getting Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Just Cause 2 – both very graphic intensive titles, which the Shield should have no trouble in rendering.

Known for exceeding user expectations, NVIDIA never fails to deliver. With a year that is starting out with a bang, plus the success of their latest graphics cards, 2017 looks like it is going to be NVIDIA’s year after all.
