Nokia, fresh from its hiatus and churning out some great smartphones to beat the competition, is also looking to enter its own contender for the king of the AI assistant hill – Say hello to ‘Viki’.
Nokia may soon launch its AI assistant named Viki.
Now, before we get ahead of ourselves and start speculating when it’s going to release, the only news so far regarding any updates about the AI Assistant is that Nokia have filed for a trademark in the EU for the name ‘Viki’, according to a source from Engadget. The trademark has been described as a “a software for the creation and monitoring of mobile and web assistants working with digital knowledge and combining all data sources into a single chat and voice-based interface.” That’s just a longer way of saying that Nokia is filing for a trademark for their Virtual AI assistant.
Actively, Nokia, once its AI assistant gets kick-started, will face the likes of Siri, Cortana, Google Assistant and Alexa to contend with. Even Samsung’s Viv might be a serious play on the cards right now in the virtual assistants’ game. Just goes to show how important the innovation has been over the past couple of years and how well integrated manufacturers want their phones to be with their users’ lives.
Nokia’s spokesperson didn’t really allow for anyone take comments, saying that the company does in fact register various trademark names from time to time, but they can’t really speak about what or why these trademarks are registered.This still doesn’t mean that there will be an immediate release any time soon by the company, but just that it’s probably in the works and that Nokia may or may not be thinking about using it.
It is worth noting that although HMD Global may be owning Nokia, they don’t own or control whatever it does, that gives Nokia complete freedom to make their app work on all devices, should they choose to, even though we’ll probably see Viki come out on one of Nokia’s own. That’s a good proposition for a company like Nokia making a comeback.
It’s good to see that Nokia is taking the reins and being so proactive in its endeavours. We might just see the return of the once most successful phone-maker ever.
