Nokia renews partnership with Zeiss for a second innings in the Android arena

When Nokia ruled the roost in the phone segment about a decade ago, it did, not only because of the performance and the durability of the phones, but also because of its optics. Now, with a come-back that is as good as one fit for the history books, Nokia, courtesy of HMD Global, is now rekindling its ties with Carl Zeiss – Nokia’s once exclusive lens provider.

The partnership, although now revived and well in place, there is no certain timeline just as to when the next Nokia with Carl Zeiss optics will crop up. Just yesterday, the reports arrived of Nokia’s plans to re-ignite the flames of the older iconic Nokia models and to re-modernize its image; so, while Nokia is slowly building its empire from scratch, it will do so at a steady pace. When Nokia does eventually release the Carl Zeiss branded smartphones of its own, it will have to content with the iPhone’s superior optics as well as the likes of Samsung’s and other Android stalwarts. Then again, it was because of iconic Nokia phones such as the Nokia 808 and PureView phones, that more manufacturers decided to take on a more hand-on approach to making their smartphone cameras a lot more powerful.

According to reports, this partnership is one of many that HMD Global have been making in order to carefully strengthen Nokia’s foot-hold in the smartphone industry and make it a force to be reckoned with. This strategy will play well for consumers as Nokia is bringing in that nostalgic factor once again by bringing back a partnership that was well received by users and critics alike. Currently, the company is doing well living off of the highly talked about 3310 phone that is not a smartphone, but just a feature phone. The Nokia N3, N5 and N6 have not yet been released and will also not feature the new Carl Zeiss branded optics. Following future models, however, it seems that smartphones made by Nokia after its initial three models debut, will come with the much-anticipated camera lenses.

The collaboration is exclusive to Nokia and Carl Zeiss, which is good news as consumers will only be able to access the kind of quality and assurance that these two brands are known for providing. There is word that Nokia is currently developing two flagship-grade devices that will take on the iPhone 8 and other Android flagships at the end of this year. The phones in question being the Nokia 8 and Nokia 9, which could also possibly be the first to feature Carl Zeiss lenses. Perhaps that is the reason for the delay in the phones’ releases as well. Fingers crossed then!
