The iPhone X has come out with impressive tech for AR and VR experiences and the latest from Apple’s offerings has given us minimal usage for these applications, being limited only to creating Animoji and perhaps letting facial recognition do its magic on the device. There is still much more left to be desired for, since potential of AR and VR have not been tapped into by the company.
We might see Apple be a lot more serious about their 3D sensing technologies as the company is reportedly developing a new 3D sensor for its rear camera. We will most likely be seeing the new sensor sometime in 2019. It will be used for taking advantage of AR and VR possibilities on the phone. The proposed system will be implemented by firing out lasers from the device, while measuring how long it would take for the reflection to return. This will create depth. The same depth information can supposedly be captured through dual lens cameras as well. The company’s newest solution will be more specific and be a precise and robust solution
The next generation of the iPhone will most likely come with the original 5.8-inch OLED display, and there will also be a second ‘Plus’ variant with a 6.5-inch OLED display. There is also a third model which should come with a 6.1-inch screen that will come with half the resolution as its OLED siblings. It will be a lower-resolution display and will also be the cheapest, coming in at a cost of $650-$750. The speculation comes from popular analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has forecasted a release of these new iPhones to happen sometime around next year. We may also see all three variants upcoming, to be bezel-less as well. They are all said to be available next year.
The additional 3D sensor that is currently under development, will be used for augmented reality abilities and three dimensional scanning. In fact, sources indicate that the technology is still in its early stages of testing. Apple is also allegedly in talks with companies like Panasonic and Sony who will most likely be supplying the new sensors. We should also expect a similar notch-style approach as seen in the iPhone X. As far as more plans for the company are concerned, we should look forward to a headset that contains its own operating system, to make its appearance in 2020 as well.
