The modular phone still lives. And Motorola’s new Z successor is enough testament. The Moto Z successor will be called the Moto Z2 and will bring back the popular modular smartphone in a brand-new trim.

What will feature on the device and how it will be once it comes out is not yet known. According to a report from Phandroid, serial leaker Evan Blass had recently shown off a Moto Z2 logo with the ‘2’ in superscript, hinting at a possible successor to the original. The leaker has apparently confirmed that Lenovo is taking strides in making the next iteration of the Moto Z more powerful than its predecessor for sure.
The Moto Mods may make a return as well, but whether the same mods as last time can be used on the newer model is yet to be confirmed. If there is a change in the design language however, that would mean a brand-new selection of Moto Mods to choose from. We aren’t too sure how many people even bought the JBL speaker Mod for that matter. The concept surrounding the device was sound. It was modular, and not, at the same time.
The new Moto Z will be launched on the second half of this year according to a report from India Today. The phone was first spotted on Geekbench, then known as the humble and unassuming XT1650. According to the benchmarking app, the phone will have 4GB of RAM and Nougat 7.1.1 outside the box.
The phone might also potentially host the might Snapdragon 835 chip, but it has not been confirmed just yet (much like the other specifications mentioned above). Since Samsung has officially emptied out Qualcomm’s stock of Snapdragon 835 SoCs. Apart from that, the upcoming OnePlus 5 as well as the new Xiaomi flagship will also feature the same chip, whether the Moto Z2 will get some of that 835 goodness is still in question. Other rumors and speculations suggest that the Z2 will come with an iris scanner as well for more security and biometric authentication. The original Moto Z was launched back in June last year. The same may be the case for the next generation Moto Z as well.
The Moto Z had enjoyed its fame as being the underdog of the smartphone crowd, being a capable all-rounder offering some extra incentive with its modular capabilities. This time around, Lenovo will have to do more than just add a cover for an external camera or speaker. We’ll know soon what they have in mind and whether it will be just as redefining as its older sibling.
