Mi Portable Mouse is a cheaper, better alternative to the Magic Mouse 2

Xiaomi has just announced a new product – an addition to their already diverse range of products, from electric phones, cycles, pressure cookers and even fitness bands. Now it’s introducing its own Mouse.

Dubbed the Mi Portable Mouse. Some might say that it’s a cheaper Magic Mouse, but it won’t be the giant blunder of a computer peripheral that the Apple device was. Apple wouldn’t let users use the mouse while it was charging, which doesn’t take a lot of designers to figure out where they went wrong on that one. Thankfully, the Mi Portable Mouse comes in as cheaper, just as capable, and more sensible option.

The mouse offers two very practical and convenient features – it can be used on laptops, TVs and smartphones for use. It can also simultaneously be connected to two devices at a time. The user simply needs to switch between devices through a switch on the mouse. Pretty neat, no? It’s not something that’s been thought of as much. Especially for those of us who have to shuffle between two systems for productivity.

The mouse is connected through the standard Bluetooth 4.0 as well as 2.4G wireless adapter. Its wireless range extends up to 10 metres, so people seated at their couch can control the TV with ease. With a battery included, the mouse weighs 77.5 grams to the dot. And it’s made of some solid state anodized aluminium. The mouse is pretty hungry for power too. Although users won’t need to charge it like the Magic Mouse, they’ll need to feed it batteries – that’s two AA batteries.

Its laser positioning is said to provide 95 percent accuracy, which may or may not be a factor to take into consideration while buying. It might look like the Magic Mouse, but not so much, really as most other reviewers might claim. It might have the same design language and the sense of scale, but it’s a completely different, more practical device to consider.

Xiaomi is on a roll of late, releasing everything from robots to water purifiers. It’s taking a step into consumer durable goods. And the Mi Portable Mouse is just the beginning. It’s also great value for what it offers. Once it’s fully available, it’ll retail for somewhere near the $18 mark.

Good going Xiaomi!
