Lenovo reveals AR headset DaystAR, smart speaker-projector and smart vest

Lenovo has decided to take on augmented reality in full force, with the introduction of its new brand of AR headsets called DaystAR. The Chinese computer manufacturer revealed its new foray into AR at the annual Tech World innovation summit, apart from a few new Yoga Books.

Engadget reports that Lenovo also introduced a brand new smart speaker-projector device at the convention, which were part of the concept products on showcase along with the AR headset. The DaystAR headset is a stand-alone unit headset that comes with its own processing unit as well as a 40-degree field of view. The headset need not be connected to a phone or a PC to depend on system performance or hardware boosting. Lenovo aims at creating its own eco-system of apps and programs that will be compatible with its AR headsets, encouraging developers to come up with their own ideas for games and apps that can be used on the device.

This is the second time that Lenovo has delved into the AR segment as the company had previously collaborated with Disney on a Star Wars-themed HoloChess and light-saber focused experience. However, that was made just for smartphones at the time. Now Lenovo aims at hitting the AR market completely with their own independent AR solutions. Whether it will support the mainstream AR applications and programs that are currently on the market is yet to be seen.

While the headset is simply a concept, the headset features a turn-wheel strap adjustment, a rather slim profile as well as quite a few sensors to track motion. The headset showcased was also shown to come in four metallic colors. The final product should be expected to be slightly different from this though.

Among the other products on display, Lenovo also introduced a few new concepts as well such as the SmartCast+ which is a speaker/projection unit that not only acts as a smart speaker, but can also project images and videos. Lenovo says that the device would be useful in educational applications.

The company will also be launching its own smart assistant app to rival the existing AIs currently on the market. It would be called CAVA which stands for Context Aware Virtual Assistant and feature facial recognition, natural language understanding, deep learning and so on. Lenovo also introduced another new vest called SmartVest which comes with its own ECG monitor that can check the heart rhythm round-the-clock. It consists of a total of 10 sensors that are built into the smart clothing. The vest will be able to transmit information to its companion app and provide early warnings of cardiovascular problems such as tachycardia or atrial fibrillation.
