Google’s music streaming service is now accessible to all in India.
Google Play Music was first launched in 2011. Though available in over 60 countries, it was waiting to be unveiled in India where Google has a large market share.
On the Google Play Music, users can now browse through top charts, new releases, among a wide range of other categories. The music can be streamed or downloaded to computer or device. In addition to web, the service is also available for Android and iOS.
The songs listed appear to be selling at Rs 15 ($0.2) for single track. The rates however vary if looking to add an entire album or title. Google Play allows you to preview a song before adding to cart. Payment for purchases can be made through credit as well as debit card. The platform also accepts gift cards or promo codes.
The Google Play Music catalogue boasts of over 35 million songs. The smartphone app even has a radio curated by experts based on songs, artists, or albums. And subscriptions come with membership to YouTube Red, so users can enjoy YouTube ad-free in the background or offline. The service is still to be introduced in India.
The latest news comes just a day after Google launched a slew of India-specific products. A new app called YouTube Go, Wi-Fi hotspots in public places and Hindi language support for Google Assistant were among others revealed on Tuesday.
Though late, Google’s entry to music streaming arena will add to fierce battle. The music streaming industry in India has come a long way in a year’s time. It is now crowded by players that include Saavn, Hungama, Wynk and Apple Music.
