Google Voice updated after long overdue: Here is what’s new

Google Voice has received an overhaul across Android, iOS and web apps. The call-forwarding and voicemail service brings a number of new features, spanning text as well as calls.

Launched in 2009, Google Voice did not receive any attention in terms of updates or enhancements for a considerable time. But, finally Google has decided to shake things up.

To start with, you have “leaner, more intuitive design” to keep everything more streamlined. The Inbox has separate tabs for text messages, calls and voicemails. Additionally, the conversations stay in one continuous thread. This way you can easily see distinguish messages from each of your contacts.

Towards messaging, Google has added support for group and photo MMS as well as in-notification replies. “And we’re starting to introduce voicemail transcription for Spanish and will improve accuracy over time,” Jan Jedrzejowicz, Product Manager, Google Voice, said in a blog post.

Going forward, Jan said, the team will provide new updates and features to the Google Voice apps.

“If you currently use Hangouts for your Google Voice communication, there’s no need to change to the new apps, but you might want to try them out as we continue to bring new improvements,” he advised.

Google has started to roll out the updates today. It will be made available to everyone in the coming weeks.
