Facebook brings 360-video experience to live streaming

Facebook’s live broadcasting now will support 360-degree videos. The social networking giant will be making the new service live with a NatGeo broadcast tomorrow.

Dubbed as Live 360, the live streaming service will slowly roll out with select Pages.

As part of the launch, NatGeo’s Facebook page on Tuesday will broadcast live 360 degrees from the Mars Desert Research Station facility in Hanksville, Utah. The program will show eight scientists emerging from pods after 80 days.

It will show you behind the scenes, particularly the living quarters, the space suits, and how the scientists take a rover out for a spin across the Martian landscape.

This first Live 360 will also include a Q&A with a line-up of science experts, writers and thinkers, and will take questions from the Facebook audience.

In a blog post, Facebook said Live 360 video will be available to more Pages in the coming months. And it will roll out more broadly for all Pages and Profiles in 2017.

“Live video on Facebook gives people an immediate, authentic window into what’s happening in the world right now; 360 video immerses viewers fully into the scene, letting them explore on their own and experience a new environment,” writes Supratik Lahiri, a Product Manager at Facebook.
