After a lack of sales for its latest instalment – Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, the company behind the franchise, Square Enix, has decided to put the series on hold for further development.
For now, the world will not get to see any more sequels in the series coming up, as the developers have officially kept the franchise on hiatus, according to a report by Digital Trends.
Well known for its role-playing elements and its sci-fi theme, Deus gained a huge fan base over the years and ended up becoming one of Square Enix’s most profitable games. Since then, the developer has set some high expectations for sales figures and performance, which the game didn’t deliver. Mankind Divided was released around the same time as Madden 17 and King of Fighters XIV, at a time of the year that is especially quiet for new releases to gain some traction.
While the company’s Tomb Raider franchise became a commercial success by selling around 3.5 million copies, the company had expected it to reach at least 6 million – which is quite an ambitious proposal.
But by putting the franchise to the side, Square Enix can use their time to focus on other upcoming projects it has planned, such as the highly-anticipated Marvel Avengers tie-up multi-game deal the company had just signed, as mentioned by Forbes, which also reports that there will be a DLC that will come to Mankind Divided, but that won’t be able to answer the impending questions that fans of the series have been asking. Seems like they will have to wait a little more for the answers.
While several scenarios in the story and plot of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided will remain unresolved, it will take a few years for fans to cope. Square Enix is currently developing titles for the Avengers series as well as Guardians of the Galaxy title in the coming months. Deus Ex will now be among the other games in a long list of titles to be stuck in development or on hiatus, which fans will just have to pray and hope will arrive either sooner, or later.
