Google on Tuesday unveiled the Chromecast Ultra, a 4K version of the popular HDMI streaming stick. It was among a host of new hardware announced at the Made by Google event in San Francisco.
The 3rd generation of Chromecast adds 4K support, with DolbyVision and HDR and is almost identical to Chromecast 2. The dongle-like device has an Ethernet port for more connectivity options, and is said to be 1.8 times faster than Chromecast 2.
“Chromecast Ultra includes everything you love about Chromecast. Plus, it comes with advanced features like 4K and High Dynamic Range (HDR) support, faster speed and Wi-Fi improvements,” wrote Suresh Kolla, an engineering director at Google, in a blog post.
Initially, Chromecast Ultra will support streaming of 4K content from Netflix, YouTube and Vudu. Later this year, Google Play Movies & TV will be rolling out 4K content as well. And even if your TV isn’t 4K-ready, Chromecast Ultra automatically optimizes your TV’s picture.
Interestingly, users can cast content from thousands of apps using phone, tablet or laptop. “Mirror any content from your Android device or from a browser tab on your laptop (using Chrome) to the TV. And it comes in a small size that hides nicely behind your TV, without adding clutter to your living room,” the blog post said.
The best part? Chromecast works with Google Home, a voice-activated speaker powered by the Google Assistant. You can use Google Home to control your TV completely hands free. Simply say “Ok, Google, play the Jungle Book trailer on my TV” to watch the YouTube video on the big screen.
According to Google, some 30 million Chromecast devices has been sold till date. If you are planning to buy the latest, you might need to wait a little longer. Chromecast Ultra will only be available in November for $69. In the U.S., it will sell at Best Buy, the Google Store, Target, and Walmart.
