Asus ROG Zephyrus is a new gaming laptop that is super slim and even powerful

After having shown to the world what it was capable of when tasked with creating a budget laptop offering, Asus created the VivoBook, packing every essential piece of hardware that would do great on a budget configuration. Now, with the introduction of the company’s new ROG rig, the Zephyrus, Asus is showcasing what it can do with a gaming rig, unhinged.

The ROG Zephyrus gaming laptop is the slimmest laptop till date to carry the almighty NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 GPU. It is also the first laptop to come with NVIDIA’s Max-Q profile, which is a new breed of laptops that is purely engineered and enhanced for efficiency and performance. Design-wise, this is already one of the thinnest gaming laptops the world will see any time soon. Measuring at just 17.9mm in thickness. Asus has shown that it can pack practicality into a slim figure, and that practicality shows when the laptop is opened up and the chassis expands a little bit, to breathe, unfolding a small air vent in order to increase airflow.

It is also quite sharp to look at, with distinctly sharp edges, a creased lid and a keyboard that is pushed forward in order to make space for the hefty internals underneath. This trend is catching on quite fast – something that the Razer Blade Pro also comes with and was carried forward towards Acer’s Predator gaming rig as well.

The laptop will feature a 15.6-inch screen with an HD resolution that comes with a 100 percent  sRGB colour gamut along with G-Sync and 120Hz refresh rate. If that is not going to make games smooth, then nothing else will. While there is considerable room for the screen to increase its resolution to even 4K comfortably, 1080p seems to be the sweet spot that will offer the most optimum performance. One of the more notable features of the laptop will be its RGB lighting enabled keyboard along with a right-handed touchpad which also doubles up as a reversible number-pad.

Windows Central reports that the meat of the system, is the NVIDIA GTX 1080 GPU, a seventh generation Intel Core i7 processor that can go all the way up to the most powerful 7700HQ with a RAM configuration that can go as high as 24GB. The Zephyrus will have no trouble churning out VR content, which was shown off at the launch event in Taipei. With specs like this, the system will be capable of completing task-loads in a very short amount of time. The Zephyrus comes complete with a variety of ports such as for USB 3.1 ports, Thunderbolt 3 over USB Type-C, HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort.

The biggest USP from all of this, however, will be the size of the laptop and just how easy it is carry, weighing in at just 2.24 kg. This tank of a machine will be able to churn out content across multiple displays with its bevy of ports and setups. There is also the fact that unlike most premium gaming laptops, the ROG Zephyrus looks rather professional and stealthy, not being loud with over-the-top insignias or artwork on the chassis – something that many will be able to appreciate.

Considering that this is only the second NVIDIA Max-Q certified laptop, with the first being Acer’s Predator Triton, it won’t only be cheaper than Acer’s offering, but will also be lighter and better looking. This may just well be the gaming laptop of the year.
