Alcatel has sent media invites for a new modular smartphone it is releasing on February 27. The French smartphone maker is tipped to unveil at least five devices. Undoubtedly, the one with modular capabilities will be the most distinctive. Here are some highlights that might be of interest to you.
Swappable Backs
Alcatel’s modular phone is expected to come with a modular back panel that will glow in sync with the music. It will make use of LEDs for the effect, similar to the JBL Pulse. In fact the press invite distributed by the TCL-owned brand hinted at the glowing modular back panel. The invite had the tagline ‘Light Up’ with colorful LED lights shown on the rear of a device. It could be a real crowd puller like Moto Mods or even not playing on its favor.
Camera & Processor
Besides the modular rear panel, the device is expected to sport a 13MP rear camera with dual-tone LED flash. There will also be an octa-core MediaTek processor that will power the device.
Pricing & Launch
Sources estimate the device could cost around €320. Also, we are not sure whether it will be an entirely new device or a successor of one previously launched. Some reports mention the modular phone could be the Idol 5. Details on the specs and features will be revealed on February 27. Alcatel’s event is scheduled to start at 9:30am CET.
With regard to the other four handsets, there is no indication on whether it will have modular capabilities or will be simple upgrades of existing lineup. More details should emerge around the last week of this month.
