While a lot of manufacturers have been making the change to portable and convenient form-factors, Dell has decided to join the fray, with their reveal of the new Dell XPS 13 2-in-1.
The XPS 13 was a favorite among users for its powerhouse performance and style, all that could only be matched by Apple’s MacBooks. It also gave its competitors – HP’s Spectre series and Lenovo’s Yoga series a run for their money. Now it’s going to be an even bigger threat, with Dell adding the ability to allow for tablet usage as well. The laptop was first leaked by Windows Central earlier and now the specs are out.
According to CNet, the new XPS will come with Intel’s new Core i5 and i7 Y-series low-voltage processors which should be perfect for this sort of form factor. Although in terms of power and performance, we’re not sure how these will fair, compared to its predecessors. The screen will feature a pixel-rich 3,200×1,800 resolution display. There are also interestingly, dual webcams placed directly under the screen. Windows Hello will come by means of an optionally available fingerprint sensor. The switch to Kaby Lake processors coupled with the screen quality and functionality that Dell is known for will make any user happy.
Like the Surface Book, the Dell XPS 13 will be able to fold completely backwards and also hold itself in the form of a tent. The screen also allows support for Dell’s optional Dell Active Pen that has 2048 levels of sensitivity, which makes it a direct competitor to the Surface Book.
The battery promises about 15 hours of usage from the laptop thanks to its 46 watt-hour battery, but it’s still a speculative number that hasn’t seen the gruelling trials of real-world usage yet. Dell is confident about the form factor that they’ve dubbed it the smallest 13 inch 2-in-1 on the planet. And like all new-age hybrids and laptops nowadays, the XPS 13 will feature USB Type-C rather than USB 3.0 ports on its body. Of course, for making such drastic design changes, there has to some drastic cuts. But we just hope that this doesn’t involve users searching around for more adapters.
Considering that this form-factor has worked for other companies in the past, we’re expecting this XPS to be a blockbuster as well.
