Over 70 cases of faulty Galaxy Note 7 batteries reported in US?

Till the first week of September, we knew there were 35 cases of battery explosions in Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7. Going by the latest report, in the United States alone, till date there have been at least 70 cases of faulty phone batteries.

The Canadian Government in a report on September 12 indicated that Samsung has received over 70 reported cases in the US. The report warns users that the Note 7 battery has the potential to overheat and burn, posing a potential fire hazard.

Health Canada and Samsung are pushing for Note 7 owners to return the phone for a replacement.

“Consumers should immediately power down the recalled Samsung Note 7 smartphone and register as soon as possible for the Canadian Product Exchange,” urged Health Canada, the regulatory authority for health product advertisement.

The report reminded Canadians to inform any health or safety incidents with regard to the product by filling out the Consumer Product Incident Report Form.

Some 2.7 million Note 7 devices were sold between August 19 and September 1, 2016.

Last week, two separate incidents of fire caused by battery explosion spread like wildfire even as Samsung admitted the incidents were caused by a flaw in the battery.

The first involved a jeep in Florida that burst into flames after a Note 7 set alight when it was put on charge inside the vehicle. The other incident involved a man in Horry County, South Carolina, who left his Galaxy Note 7 charging in the garage. When he returned home, he found his house in flames.

The recall is a major setback for Samsung, which had high hopes from its flagship device at a time when rival Apple has launched the iPhone 7. It is estimated to take about two weeks to swap old Galaxy Note 7s for new phones.
