Snapchat’s new wearable is a hi-tech sunglass with integrated camera

The popular messaging app Snapchat is working on a modernistic camera that will sell as an eyewear with different colors.

Spectacles is not the typical run-of-the-mill gadget you’d expect to see. It is a sunglass with an integrated video camera to record short clips.

The company says the product is one of the smallest wireless video cameras in the world, capable of taking a day’s worth of snaps on a single charge. It is integrated seamlessly into sunglasses available in 3 different colors.

Through Bluetooth or WiFi, Spectacles can connect directly to Snapchat and transfer clips into the app in a video format. The camera, reports The Wall Street Journal, uses a 115-degree-angle lens and records video in a circular frame instead of the typical rectangle.

Spectacles will sell with a price tag of $130.

On Saturday, Snapchat not only announced the new wearable product but also informed it was changing the name of the company to Snap Inc.

The re-branding is to consolidate the brand portfolio and give a more universal appeal. “When we were just getting started it made sense to name our company Snapchat Inc., because Snapchat was our only product! Now that we are developing other products, like Spectacles, we need a name that goes beyond just one product – but doesn’t lose the familiarity and fun of our team and brand,” Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel wrote in the official blog.

Changing the name also has another benefit, he adds. “When you search for our products it will be easier to find relevant product information rather than boring company information or financial analysis. You can search Snapchat or Spectacles for the fun stuff and leave Snap Inc. for the Wall Street crowd.”

Snapchat is one of the world’s most popular and fastest growing video storytelling platforms. The service has crossed 100 million users worldwide.
