Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus: 7 features that you need to know about

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus are now official. And despite having been leaked numerous times, the release has still given us a lot of new features to be excited about. Here are seven of those features that will make buying the new flagship king (for now) worth buying, or at least make buyers consider the phones for purchase.

1) You can literally turn it into a computer

It’s not every day that phones can be used as well as computers. It will take a lot of guts for manufacturers to market their phones as being a desktop replacement, but Samsung had no problem at all in marketing their flagship phones as being able to turn into operable desktop interfaces. Thanks to an external accessory called the DeX, users will be able to turn their Samsung Galaxy S8 OS into a functional desktop OS for use. During the Unboxed event, a demonstration was shown where the user could actually unlock the device with the Iris scanner for security and use the desktop just like Windows Hello. That is some serious innovation right there.

2) Different processors for different regions

Like tradition, Samsung have continued to release their flagship phones with two different processors this time around as well, with the much-hyped Snapdragon 835 that is an Octa core (2.3GHz + 1.7 GHz) 64-bit chip and the equally, if not more powerful, Exynos 8895 (2.3GHz + 1.9 GHz) that is also 64-bit and both these processors run on a 10nm process. There will be no shortage of power at all here, and considering the first point on this article, buyers can be rest assured, that they are buying the best of the best out there right now in cutting edge technology.

3) Display

The display steals the show. The entire front of the phone is the display, literally. It curves to the sides and also takes up about 83% of the front of the phone which is more than what people could possibly want. The display is a beautiful AMOLED display that is a Quad HD resolution. There is no Home button, but there is a button region at the bottom of the front which does have some haptic feedback, which is pretty cool.

4) Security

The fingerprint sensor is now at the back of the phone, next to the camera and the there is also a facial recognition camera on the front of the phone that is used for facial recognition for quick unlocking. As per the demonstrations, the new facial recognition function works like a charm and will be a darling for business users and casual users alike. These security features will be able to provide privacy for apps as well as give authentication for payments and such.

5) Say cheese to an auto-focus selfie camera and dual-pixel rear camera

Same as last year, the rear camera is a 12MP sensor but this time around, it does also have an auto-focus front-facing camera that’s an 8MP sensor. If its predecessor was any testament, the new model should be impressive as well.

6) Bixby

Why should a phone that has Google Assistant also have another AI assistant? Well, that is probably because it can do a lot more than the Google Assistant can. Samsung is so confident about their new AI that they’re even adding a special button the side of the phone that can activate Bixby. With voice control, Bixby can read texts, find images, search for products, analyse QR codes.

7) Pre-order for a free Gear VR

Pre-orders start on March 30 and will receive a free Gear VR with a controller. Each unit will also come with a pair of AKG earbuds worth $99. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S8 and S8+ will be available starting on April 21, and will be offered in five color variants – Midnight Black, Orchid Gray, Arctic Silver, Coral Blue and Maple Gold.
