Samsung Galaxy S8 Rumors: Latest on specs, features, pricing and release date

The release of the Galaxy S8 is so close, people can almost feel it. Well, they actually can anyway, since the leaks surrounding the phone have now left no suspense until the actual launch. We almost know everything that is going to feature on the Galaxy S8. Here is the low down before the big event on March 29.

Specifications

The most important bit of information regarding the Galaxy S8 is the specs that it will come with. Being the first smartphone to feature the mighty Snapdragon 835 SoC as well as the Exynos 8895, calling it a powerhouse performer will seem like an understatement. It will come with 4GB of RAM but it has been rumored that those in China and Korea might get a 6GB RAM variant as well.

The phone will come with Nougat out of the box and will also feature dual-SIM slots. Based on the variants, the featured batteries will be 3,000mAh and 3,500mAh powered ones respectively.

Cameras

The Galaxy S8 is expected to come with a 12MP camera on the back that will be a dual-pixel sensor, while the front will be comprised of an 8MP snapper. Both are set to feature an aperture of f/1.7 and the rear module will feature optical image stabilization as well as laser autofocus. One rumor doing the rounds is that the rear camera will be able to shoot super slow motion videos at an absurd 1000 fps.

Security features

The fingerprint sensor has been moved to the back of the phone, now being positioned near the camera module. It will also supposedly support gesture control for certain applications and can be configured to open or activate certain programs on the device. While it was first rumored to feature an iris scanner like the Note 7 did, it seems that Samsung took the tech a notch further and instead decided to add facial recognition. The security features can be used to authorize payment methods such as Samsung Pay for making those quick transactions. The facial recognition camera will be a separate module that will be placed separately from the selfie snapper, and will have a 3.7MP sensor.

Display

This one’s the most awaited feature yet. The S8 is set to come with a massive 5.8-inch display while the bigger S8 Plus variant will come with a 6.2-inch display. It’s been seen by the leaks that the phones will have rounded corners, much like the LG G6. They will also be nearly bezel-less displays. They will be curved OLED displays with a 2960×2400 resolution and an ultrawide aspect ratio of 18:5:9. Samsung may bump down the display resolution to 1080p just to save battery however.

Design

Samsung is taking a completely different design ideology with the S8 by ditching the home button for the first time and will instead come with on-screen navigation buttons. There will also be a dedicated Bixby button located next to the volume rockers that will activate Samsung’s new AI assistant.

The design, although beautiful, is also extremely rigid and functional. The body is IP68-rated for dust and water resistance so it can be roughed around a bit as well.

Accessories

AKG is set to produce proprietary headphones for the S8 that will replace the regular white ones that fans are used to seeing on previous flagships. The new ones will have braided cables that will prevent tangling and also prevent the settling of dust, supposedly. Samsung is also rumored to be launching a series of power banks in different colours with a capacity of 5100mAh.

There will also be a unique dock called DeX for porting the Samsung S8 experience to an external display or PC for a kind of continuum support, for better productivity. Samsung is also going to launch a new Gear VR model as well as something called the Gear 360.

Pricing

The S8 will start at a price EUR 799 while the S8 Plus will have a starting price of EUR 899. The Gear VR should cost about EUR 129, the Gear 360 will cost around EUR 229 and the DeX will set buyers back by EUR 150. The prices are subject to region however, so these numbers should be taken with a pinch of salt.
