Google Play Music uses machine learning to suggest tracks

Google has completely overhauled its streaming service Google Play Music for enhanced user experience.

The overhaul has introduced machine learning to suggest music. It will also use factors like location, activity, and the weather to personalize music for wherever you are.

“To provide even richer music recommendations based on Google’s understanding of your world, we’ve plugged into the contextual tools that power Google products,” Elias Roman, product manager at Google Play Music, wrote in a blog post.

“When you opt in, we’ll deliver personalized music based on where you are and why you are listening — relaxing at home, powering through at work, commuting, flying, exploring new cities, heading out on the town, and everything in between.”

The new experience will roll out this week on Android, iOS and the web. You can expect to see a new home screen which Google says will be the “ultimate personal DJ”. The recommendations will be powered by Google’s machine learning systems and also by a team of expert music curators.

And if you are travelling and have lost connection, you can even access an offline playlist based on what you’ve listened to recently without downloading.

You can enjoy Google Play Music for free with advertising or pay $9.99 for ad-free streaming. The premium service is needed to enable music offline. Paid subscription includes access to Google’s other music service YouTube Red.
