Garmin’s quatix 5 smartwatch is well suited for marine environment

One of the many applications that smart watches can be effectively useful for, is during maritime activity as there are a number of sensors and software that allow for navigators and operators to safely tread the waters. Thanks to Garmin, there now is a smartwatch for life on the sea.

The Garmin quatix 5 will reportedly sell for $600

The company announced the arrival of the quatix 5 smartwatch, designed specifically for maritime activities. What the smartwatch offers in terms of unique features is a complete connective solution to the boat, equipped with chart-plotters as well as compatibility connectivity to the auto-pilot, remote multifunction display, waypoint marking, data streaming measurements of temperature, depth, air pressure and wind as well as a host of other marine equipment. Being an active smartwatch, the device also features different profiles and modes for land-based activities such as biking and running, hiking and swimming and even paddle boating among many others.

The company is boasting long battery life, a very user-friendly interface and toughness built into a compact form-factor. The watch is also customizable, allowing users to swap their wrist bands for different materials in a few seconds rather than using any tools. The regular smartwatch features are also in place, such as heart rate sensing, smart notifications and daily life tracking. Not only will the smartwatch be connected to ship’s controlling equipment, there is also a special link that can be made to the audio systems through the FUSION-Link Lite app.

The watch itself is submersible to up to 100 metres. Being a very rigid device, the display is also sunlight-readable and has LED backlighting. The sensor capabilities of the smartwatch are extremely impressive since it packs an EXO stainless steel antenna and high-range GLONASS support. The battery life boasted by the company is touted to be 24 hours in GPS mode alone, and 60 hours in UltraTrac.

The smartwatch will come in two variants – the standard one which will sell for $600 and a Wi-Fi enabled Sapphire lens with a stainless-steel band combination that will retail for $850. Considering that the watch has its own alarm to warn users of their boat drifting while anchored as well as measure the length of the Anchor line that should be used when anchoring. For a watch that can literally steer a boat, the price does not seem too demanding.

This watch has more tricks up its sleeve than Jack Sparrow himself.
