Asus’ first phone to come with Google’s Tango augmented reality tech and Daydream virtual reality platform is finally available at outlets across the US. Verizon is selling the carrier-locked version of the device for $648. An unlocked version of the device can be got with other carriers for $599.
Asus ZenFone AR is a new breed of smartphone that is designed specifically for virtual and augmented reality. It was first showcased at the CES 2017 in January. The device boasts a 5.7-inch Quad HD (2,560 x 1,440) screen and is powered by a Snapdragon 821 chipset, paired with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage. For more performance and storage, Asus has given the option for an 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. It is backed by a 3300mAh non-removable battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support.
Photography addicts will love the camera sensors fitted on the device. You have an incredible 23MP rear camera with optical image stabilization features, phase detection autofocus, plus depth- and motion-tracking sensors for Tango. On the front you have an 8MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture, a 85-degree wide-angle lens, and dual-LED flash.
ZenFone AR is the second smartphone after the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro which has Project Tango built into the hardware. Tango uses depth sensing and motion tracking to build navigable 3D virtual environments.
Weighing only 170 grams, the ZenFone AR combines an impressive list of features without having to make it appear oversized or awkward. ZenFone AR is among few other Android devices that support Google’s DayDream VR headset. It even offers a wireless motion control remote to navigate through the VR apps and games available on the platform.
The device is available across the US at both online and offline stores. While the 6GB variant has been priced at $599, the 8GB variant is available for $699.
